AI at the KHI - Level 1: Foundations and Responsible Use

28 September 2026
10:00am-12:00pm
Palazzo Grifoni & online

As the use of generative AI becomes increasingly relevant across research, administration, and everyday work at the KHI, there is broad agreement on the importance of developing a shared understanding of these technologies, their possibilities, and their responsible use.
We are therefore pleased to invite you to the first session of AI at the KHI, a new institute-wide two-level course designed to provide practical guidance, shared principles, and a common basis for working with AI at the KHI.

AI at the KHI – Level 1: Foundations and Responsible Use

  • 28 September 2026, 10:00-12:00
  • DH Lab in Palazzo Grifoni, ground floor (behind reception, please ring the bell)
  • Online participation will also be possible (Zoom link will be shared in due time)
This introductory module provides a practical introduction to generative AI, responsible use, and the tools available within the Max Planck Society. The aim is to help colleagues use AI effectively in research and administrative work while understanding its limitations, risks, and the institutional principles that should guide its use.

Program:

  • Understanding generative AI
What current AI systems can and cannot do; reliability, hallucinations, and critical evaluation.
  • Using AI effectively
Basic prompting and iterative interaction; writing, correction, translation, summarisation, and brainstorming.
  • Max Planck AI tools
Overview and practical use of AI tools available through the Max Planck Society; choosing appropriate tools for different tasks and types of data.
  • Responsible and ethical use
Privacy, sensitive data, copyright, bias, scholarly responsibility, and human oversight.
  • KHI AI guidelines
Institutional principles and practical guidance: when AI can be used, when particular caution is required, and when it should not be used.
The course is intended for colleagues across the Institute, independently of previous experience with AI. We hope it will also provide a space to discuss questions and use cases arising in different areas of the KHI and to develop a shared approach to the responsible use of AI.
