Aby Warburg's Florence

Aby Warburg’s Florence (available on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store) invites users to embark on three curated itineraries, unveiling unexpected perspectives on Florence through the guidance of smartphone GPS.
Initially released alongside the exhibition Rooms with a View. Aby Warburg, Florence and the Laboratory of Images (Florence, Gallerie degli Uffizi, 19 September – 10 December 2023)—organized by the Gallerie degli Uffizi and the Kunsthistorisches Institut in Florenz – Max-Planck-Institut in collaboration with the Warburg Institute, London—the app is designed as a standalone project with lasting relevance. Users can continue exploring the city through Aby Warburg’s perspective, uncovering new connections and insights over time.
Aby Warburg’s Florence transforms the entire city into a living extension of the exhibition. It presents Florence as an evolving map, layered with history, memory, and artistic interpretation. Through a selection of local voices, users encounter multiple temporalities: Florence as the Renaissance city Warburg studied, the city of his own era, and the Florence of today.
Along the three itineraries, users meet more than twenty historical figures, each offering a personal perspective on their time and surroundings. These voices guide visitors through 25 locations, sharing unique episodes, details, and insights that enrich the experience.
At each stop, the app encourages users to engage actively with Florence’s urban fabric by identifying details that connect to Warburg’s Mnemosyne Atlas or objects featured in the exhibition. This interactive approach allows users to retrace Warburg’s visual constellations or forge new ones, revealing unexpected meanings and connections in the cityscape.
Developed by the Digital Humanities Lab of the Kunsthistorisches Institut in Florenz – Max-Planck-Institut, Aby Warburg’s Florence remains an open invitation to explore Florence in new ways.
