Starting soon after his death in 1602, the fame of Agostino Carracci has been overshadowed by that of his brother Annibale and his cousin Ludovico. While Agostino’s work as a printmaker has been studied fairly well, except for the now outdated dissertation by Stephen Ostrow from 1966, no comprehensive overview on his activity as a painter and draughtsman has been published. This project aims to address the gap by re-evaluating Agostino’s contribution to early Baroque art and contextualising him in the artistic and intellectual culture of his time.

The research, which will result in a two-volume book including a catalogue raisonné of his paintings and related drawings, is conducted in collaboration with Mary Vaccaro (University of Texas at Arlington) and also, for the catalogue section, Laura Staccoli (University of Warwick). A fundamental instrument of the project is a database of all works attributed to Agostino Carracci that are relevant for the catalogue, custom-built by the DH Lab.
